so you want to be a java programmer

intro

This is an introduction to JAVA, the cross-platform computer language developed by Sun Microsystems. It's meant for anyone who wants to learn, though special attention is given to the needs of first-year students in NUS School of Computing.

What's the rationale behind this? Well, looking back on my first year, I recall having to learn Java from scratch. The lectures and tutorials, while somewhat helpful, were very theoretical (who in his/her right mind would try creating a variable named _12345_ anyway?), and quite a few of my classmates were having difficulty with the language. The experienced among you may scoff at this, but keep in mind that some of these people were only partly computer-literate. I decided to throw this page together to help people who need to learn the language.

so do I need this?

That depends. People who go into this with the all-too-common 'tude "will it come out in the exam?" may not find it as helpful. You have to be committed to learning this in order to see it through - but the rewards (grade-wise as well as personal) will be more than worth it.

all right, let me begin already!

Here's the first section.
