the codex - web links
cool sites, friends' sites, or just plain weird sites

I've taken out the VRML plugin thing; it wasn't very useful anyway.
Here's a (relatively) normal button link:
the codex: java stuff and artwork by nat

Stats: this link is 120 pixels wide by 60 pixels high. That's for those of you who like exact positioning of buttons on your page. Feel free to change the size which it appears in on your page using the WIDTH and HEIGHT options in the IMG tag; just be sure that the WIDTH is double the HEIGHT.

Here's some sample code which you can cut and paste into your HTML file (make sure you're editing it as text rather than using a WYSIWYG editor, please!) to link to this webpage:

<A HREF="http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~nghsiene/"><IMG SRC="http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~nghsiene/images/codex_btn.gif" WIDTH="120" HEIGHT="60" BORDER="0" ALT="the codex: java stuff and artwork by nat"></A>

As for updating this page, I haven't found any REALLY good sites to link to lately. This page will be updated if and when I do.

cool sites

Java.sun.com
The official Java website. Some of you may wonder why, given my Javaholism (variant of "alcoholism" :), I don't use it on the main page. Answer: it's not that Java's bad, it's that current browser implementations are either buggy (IE) or slow (Netscape). However, if you're at all interested in programming, I recommend you check this site out.
On this page you can find:
- Everything about Java, including the tools to program it.

Helen
An online comic strip, and one of the coolest around to boot. "Helen" is about this female sysadmin in a company full of totally mundane, "unconnected" types. It's very funny.
On this page you can find:
- Some VERY funny cartoons.

Guardians of the West
Another page run by a friend, this is a content-heavy "fan page" for the fantasy books of David and Leigh Eddings.
On this page you can find:
- A LOT of info on David and Leigh Eddings' books and on the alt.fan.eddings newsgroup.

Starcraft.org
A website for one of my favourite games - Starcraft. It includes game strategies, news and just plain fun stuff. If you play computer games at all, this is a good site to check out - not to mention that their site design is /really/ good.
On this page you can find:
- Downloads, info and stuff related to Starcraft.

HotBot
A very good web search engine. I use it exclusively.
On this page you can find:
- A web search page.

EoK
A computer-security page run by a couple of my friends. They help you to safeguard your system against crackers, viruses and suchlike, and have been featured in the Straits Times and New Paper. This site is very comprehensive.
On this page you can find:
- Info on computer security.
- Downloads for security programs like VirusScan.

Amit's Game Programming Page
Cool. Finally I understand how to program a hexmap. :)
On this page you can find:
- Good algorithms for all sorts of stuff.

The Riven Journals
The ultimate application of Java and web technology. The Riven Journals are a series of Java web-based puzzles from the producers of the games Myst and Riven. (This is where I got the cool parchment background - but don't tell them...)
On this page you can find:
- Java puzzles.
- Some REALLY cool web design.

friends' sites

Hatta's Page
Hatta's one of my friends who's working on FYP with me. His page quite possibly has one of the best designs in SOC (apart from mine, of course :). He's also head of the Wired desk, which I steadfastly refuse to join for fear of typecasting ;), at the Ridge (see below). Oh, and he's the resident DJ for POP, the NUSSU radio station ("BAD Microsoft supporter! Bad boy! No soup for you!" :)
On this page you can find:
- Some rather strange (but cool) articles
- A webpage design guide (which, unfortunately, does not tell you how to make your page Cool. We all need our trade secrets. :)

Jasmin's Page

Says it all, sort of. Jasmin is Da Not-So-Big Boss in charge of the Features Desk at the Ridge, the campus newspaper ("No Other Options" : ) . In addition to that, she's got a very cool page. (Not good to badmouth Da Boss's Page... :) I frankly canNOT figure out how she managed to coax large amounts of orange, yellow and brown into peaceful coexistence, but the result is pretty close to phenomenal.
It might even be better than this page. : )
On this page you can find:
- Jasmin's sort-of-diary
- Some articles on this and that and the other...
- And a solicitation for marriage proposals. (jk...)

Fooky's Page
Fooky is this all-round scoundrel who aspires to be a hacker. He doesn't seem to have got it into his head that hacking does NOT mean using other people's hacking tools to do weird things to undefended systems. On the bright side, he does play a decent game of Starcraft.
On this page you can find:
- Some download links for various free/shareware utilities.

Michael's Page
Mike is a pretty good programmer, and has written a couple of shareware programs, including a full-featured HTML editor and a Java tree-menu applet. These can be found on his website.
On this page you can find:
- Some info and links (which is about all).
Mike's other (and much more useful) page is here.
On this page you can find:
- Downloads for some of the stuff Mike has written
- A utility to submit your website to !!27!! search engines!
