"Stahl"
"Stahl" was a character I originally envisioned for a (vapourware) webcomic to be entitled "Falling Stars". I've found that one of my weaknesses is character poses; I find it difficult to capture the poses of people (and tend to have difficulty getting people to model for me!), so my characters end up looking 'stiff' and unnatural. When I started drawing this particular character, however, this turned out to be an asset.
"Falling Stars" was intended, from the beginning, to have as one of its main themes the idea of leadership: what it actually means, which way of leading is best, how do you deal with challenges. Stahl is the stereotypical military leader: somewhat distant, a strict disciplinarian, and so on. He's never been in actual combat, having been an instructor in the fictional universe's version of officer school for years, and this has coloured his perceptions and attitudes, as well as influencing his leadership style. Given that he tends to be stiff and formal, the weaknesses of my rather awkward drawing style become less evident when I draw him!
The real challenge, after that, is to get the reader to identify with him as a protagonist. I've sweated over this for awhile, and still no easy solutions present themselves...
